Background: 

Ironclad Defense Works is a dynamic and rapidly growing small business specializing in defense contracting. We are currently seeking an experienced Intern who will assist our indirect strategic leadership in Norfolk, VA. The candidate will be responsible for assisting recruiting functions, including emailing prospective new hires, staff development, editing and maintaining policies that comply with DoD and NATO contracting requirements. 

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a proactive and strategic mindset with the ability to foster interdepartmental collaboration. In cooperation with the management and staff, the Intern will spearhead initiatives to nurture a positive work environment that promotes employee welfare and adherence to industry standards; this responsibility extends to ensure compliance with current laws and company directives. 

The Intern will play a critical role in assisting talent acquisition and development, aligning staffing objectives with strategic business goals. This may include assisting recruitment efforts to attract and retain high-quality candidates, particularly those with defense and technology backgrounds suitable for DoD and NATO projects. This role requires staying acquainted with compensation trends and benefits that motivate both existing staff and attract new talent, thereby fostering a workforce capable of meeting the dynamic challenges of the defense contracting industry. 

Duties: 

  • Report to management and provide decision making support through proprietary key metrics. 

  • Manage strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business. 

  • Assist in bridging management and employee relations. 

  • Assess incoming resumes to ensure a fit of the candidates with the strategic goals and security requirements of DoD and NATO contract procurement opportunities. 

  • Support current and future business needs through engagement with existing employees as needed. 

  • Assess training needs to assist in the application and monitoring of training programs as needed. 

  • Assist key management personnel by staying up to date with state and federal regulations as well as contract-specific requirements. 

  • Being present at occasional employee meetings, maintaining confidentiality and documentation in line with company policy and legal requirements. 

  • Nurture a positive working environment. 

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating legislation, advising the enforcement of adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions. 

Essential Qualifications: 

  • Currently in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree 

  • Any Professional certifications (e.g., SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) are advantageous. 

  • At least three (3) years of demonstrable experience working in a business field with related systems and databases, key metrics, and working with management personnel.  

  • Ability to review strategies along with possessing strong leadership skills. 

  • Excellent active listening, negotiation, and presentation skills. 

  • People-oriented and results-driven. 

  • Competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company. 

  • Any knowledge of government contract work environments, specifically DoD and NATO, is highly beneficial.
